Recognition

SNAPforSeniors' President & Chief Operating Officer, Eve M. Stern has been appointed to a three-year term on the Board of the Bellevue Network on Aging, part of the Bellevue Parks and Community Service Department, effective September 2006.

Company Overview

SNAPforSeniors is the only free online senior housing information source that lists all licensed housing providers and select independent living communities. SNAPforSeniors is the only source that:
  • lists all of the estimated 65,000 housing providers, not just those that pay for placement or advertising, and updates its database with licensed facilities and independent living communities.
  • indicates housing providers that have vacancies within a geographic area.
  • directly matches a senior’s specific lifestyle and care level needs with facilities.
  • has an exclusive public/private partnership with Senior Services and enjoys several other preferred relationships with Senior Information and Assistance agencies, local hospitals and non–profit organizations throughout the state such as the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western Washington and Pierce County Aging and Long Term Care.

The website safeguards users’ personal information and will not release it to anyone without the user’s permission.

SNAPforSeniors was created to quickly and efficiently assist seniors and advocates with one of the most stressful and complicated decisions of a lifetime -- identifying the best elder housing option for oneself or a loved one. SNAPforSeniors transforms what has long been a typically complex, onerous and time consuming task into a time-saving, highly personalized and informed decision-making process.

Virtually everyone will deal with the senior housing transition at one time or another.

  • The 63 million Americans age 55 and older now will grow to 100 million in just seven years, The Wall Street Journal reported in September 2006.
  • One in six American workers today care for an elder relative and that will increase to one in four (25 percent) in just six more years, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving.
Through personal experience of identifying senior housing for a loved one and market research, the SNAPforSeniors management team realized that no comprehensive and objective listing of all senior housing providers existed to help narrow the senior housing options. The idea to address this problem was defined -- match an elder’s needs and wishes with present available housing options in one free, comprehensive resource on the Internet that helps people find the best senior housing option.

Key Industry Data of Interest

The soaring demand for senior housing and its impact in the workplace
  • Demand is soaring as the aging U.S. population goes looking for someplace staffed to help elderly residents with day-to-day tasks (housekeeping, pill-taking and the like), but isn’t a full blown nursing home. Waiting lists are increasingly common, and prices are rising sharply. On average, assisted living costs about $35,000 a year in 2005 up roughly a third from 2002, before figuring in health-care expenses, according to a recent survey by MetLife, Inc.
  • “…assisted living centers are near saturation at 95 percent occupancy nationwide,” The Seattle Times reported in September 2006.
  • “…a demographic earthquake. The 63 million Americans age 55 and older now will grow to 100 million in just seven years,” The Wall Street Journal reported in September 2006.
  • “The group estimated that by 2010 Alzheimer’s disease will affect one in 10 people over age 65 or 5.6 million Americans, while the cost of care will jump 75% percent to about $160 billion per year in Medicare costs alone,” United Press International, Inc . reported in April 2006.
  • “Eldercare has begun to rival child care as a workplace issue and companies have started to realize that such support props up not just workers but the bottom line. One in six American workers care for an older relative, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving,” as reported in The Dallas Morning News, August 2006.
  • “The American Senior Housing Association (ADHA) said that on a national basis, 1 million move into senior housing.”
  • “Assisted Living centers are a fine way to care for the aged, but finding a good one isn’t a snap… With no databases available, the soundest strategy when shopping for assisted living is to visit many centers, and ask many questions, certainly of residents,” according to the Forbes: The 2006 Investment Guide.
  • “Smaller families flung over long distances are making it harder to care for ill and aging relatives these days, The Wall Street Journal reported in July 2006.

Internet use among an aging population

  • Of the 155 million people currently using the Internet in the United States, 17 percent are between the ages of 45 and 54, according to comScore Media Metrix, April 2004. Like most, they are using the Web to shop, manage their finances, keep in touch with friends and family, and gather information on an endless number of topics. With so much literally at their fingertips, today’s older adults will be the most technologically savvy—and informed—group ever to retire.
  • With more than 68 percent of baby boomers (ages 40 to 58) using the Internet frequently, chances are good that they are conducting senior housing research online, according to The Pew Internet & American Life Project found.
Consumers are going online to get information about available communities, neighborhoods, housing prices, retirement lifestyle options and more. Communities that do not provide information online and reach out to the more than 27 million baby boomers on the Internet are missing the boat, comScore Media Metrix said.
